Come and See

Writer: Steve OsterSteve Oster

“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could this be the Messiah?”

John 4:29

holding a key picked out of the dirt

The other day, a friend of mine was power-washing the sidewalk outside of our church. As he was cleaning out the crack between sidewalk and decorative wood beams, a key for one of our classrooms came flying out with all the dirt.  This key looked to be around 25 years old.  This friend and I had a conversation about the key, and then he said something profound:  Just like this key, how many people are sitting just outside the church, having not yet been found?

What great insight!  There is a lost and hurting world around us; people who simply need to be seen and invited in.  For many people, our words and actions are the power-washer they need to make their way into the church.  When Jesus was ministering to a woman at the well, He ministered to her heart, and she became the power-washer for her whole village. She was the vessel that God used to bring them to Jesus! She had not studied theology, she was not an expert in presenting the Gospel, she simply said “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could this be the Messiah?”, and many in her village came to know Jesus.

I pray that we are all encouraged to look at who is sitting just outside the doors, and invite them in with a simple “come and see.”

Prayer:  Father, thank you for rescuing me. Lord, open my eyes to see what is lost, and give me the strength to invite others to come and see Jesus!
