Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Philippians 4:8
This morning I sat on my front porch with a cup of coffee and took in the view. A vast blue sky touched the golden corn field that surrounds my house and for a moment it took my breath away. I thought about taking a picture and then decided against it. Taking in the entire view you see beauty everywhere from my house: golden and red fall leaves on the trees, spacious fields, gentle rolling hills, a creek, wildlife, and unhindered prairie views for miles. However, once you zoom in and get closer, you can see weeds, a dumpster, toys and miscellaneous items that need to be picked up in the yard, the peeling paint on my porch, and other things that will ruin a perfect picture.
It made me realize that it is all about perspective. Beauty and the mess of life co-exist. We must choose what we focus on. Will it be the beauty of life that surrounds us like the corn field and vast sky? Or will we spend our time and energy on the weeds and mess of life?
In Colossians 3:2, the Bible tells us to set our minds on what is above. How we think and what we focus on matters. To set our minds on the beauty of life and to focus on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable and excellent, that is the best way to spend our day!
